Chapter Nineteen

PCD Headquarters for District One, Washington, DC

Chills slithered down her neck even as fire coursed through her blood. How did the vampire manage to cause gooseflesh along her skin while igniting an inferno inside her? Letting him bite her had been a mistake. Huge. Colossal. Gargantuan mistake. Maybe if she kept telling herself that, she’d eventually believe it. Fail. Total fail, Bradshaw.

She climbed the parking lot stairs two at a time. Drake kept right at her heels. His presence encircled her like an electric storm, all turbulence and unbridled passion. Yet somehow, she stood at the center, safe and protected in that swirling chaos. Oh dear gods, this is so not happening. As her feet echoed along the cement steps, she imagined her mother’s voice with the same booming cadence.

Hey mom, so I kind of have this thing for a vampire. Evelyn Elizabeth Montgomery, feminist, shifter, and criminal attorney would flip her shit big time. Jame had seen it happen once or twice…okay so, maybe a half dozen times growing up. The more memorable mom meltdowns occurred after her dad left, when her grandmother died, and the night Jame snuck her human high school boyfriend into her bedroom. You will not be having boys in this house, especially some fragile human rat. If humans registered as rodents on her mother’s radar, then vampires qualified somewhere around fleas or possibly amoebas.

“What’s going on in that busy head of yours?” Drake tapped a finger against her temple again. She swatted it away and shook her head. “All right, don’t tell me. I’ll find out anyway.”

“Stuff it.” She sped through the front door, letting it swing behind her.

Drake stopped it with an open palm and called after her retreating form, “Not nice, luv. Running won’t help.”

Without looking back, she flipped him the bird. The mess with the insufferable vampire could wait ’til later. As evening fell, the code black approached the thirty-six hour mark. Every wasted minute took them further away from catching the bad guys. If the lead on the anti-SUB group turned out to be a dead end, they would be at square one. Her love life needed to take a backseat. Pronto.

The conference room door stood ajar. Inside, Dee and the Old Man sat next to each other, chatting while Slick paced the length of the table. At her approach, he stopped and shouted, “Finally. Thought you’d never get here.”

“I was only in the parking lot.”

“Where’s the bloodsucker?” Slick rocked on his heels, to the balls of his feet, and back again.

“Right here, mutt.” Drake entered behind her and took a seat across from the other agents. “Miss me?”

Slick didn’t respond but continued his kid-in-a-candy-store bouncing routine. Jame took the head chair and waved at him. “Sit down. You’re making me dizzy.”

“You’ll never believe what Meg told me,” he said all in one breath. He plopped next to Drake, a sure sign of his excitement. Under normal circumstances, the two maintained a wide berth.

A lingering silence punctuated his declaration. Jame sighed.
